ph Acidity Demystified

pH is short for potential Hydrogen. It measures the hydrogen-ion concentration of a solution. The higher the pH level, the more alkaline and oxygen rich it is. The lower the pH level, the more acidic and oxygen deprived the fluid is.

The pH ranges from 0 to 14. Keep in mind that pH scale is logarithmic. Each whole pH value below 7.0 is ten times more acidic than the next higher value. For example, a pH of 4 is ten times more acidic than a pH of 5 and 100 times (10 times 10) more acidic than a pH of 6. The same holds true for pH values above 7, each of which is ten times more alkaline than the next lower whole value. For example, a pH of 10 is ten times more alkaline than a pH of 9.

What's Healthy pH Level?

In our culture, there is little danger of someone becoming too alkaline. The pH out of balance almost always means becoming too acidic. A healthy body is slightly alkaline at a pH level of 7.4. A blood pH below 6.8 means cells not functioning correctly, symptoms and disease.

If you ever kept a fish aquarium, you know how important it is to regularly test the pH of the water in the tank. You know to keep the pH level for the fish at around 7.0, and you learn really fast that the fish will die if the pH level drops below 4.0. Anywhere in between, the fish will suffer a varying state of disease.

The Dangers of Low pH Levels.

When it comes to pH levels, the human body is not much different from fish. Like fish, if the pH of your body fluids drops too low, your cells get stressed and diseased, and eventually die. That's why cancer cells are always acidic.

The more common symptoms of low pH are low energy, fatigue, excess weight, poor digestion, aches and pains. The high acidity (low pH) level means corrosion and inflammation to your bones, joints, gastro-intestinal tract. It also makes the perfect breeding ground for microforms, which can further compromise your health.

Anyone with these symptoms should test their pH level. If your pH level is lower than 6.75, you should be extra careful about the foods you eat. You can also take supplements that are known to drain the extra acidity.
